Manutcher Milani (b. 1996, Ghana) lives and works in Zurich. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Zurich and recently completed a Bachelor in Textile Design from Lucerne in the summer of 2024.
Milani’s oeuvre, reaching across various media, is situated at the interface of art, textile design and carpet making. In recent years the artist has produced an array of tufted carpets, paintings and sculptures within artistic spaces across Europe and in his native Ghana. The carpets stand out through an abundance of symbols, dazzling colours, ornaments and whimsical figures, drawing inspiration from Ghanaian Adinkra symbols and Persian carpets. Currently Milani has expanded his focus into design and sustainable textile manufacturing. Milani’s interest in carpet making is influenced by his Persian grandfather, a carpet trader in Zurich during the 1960’s. Since 2024, Milani has established a connection with a weaver in Tehran, who has produced his most recent carpets using traditional weaving and knitting techniques, thereby remaining true to the craft and one of it’s origins.
