Unknown Carpets is a studio founded by Alejandra Domínguez and Abhinav Sethi, rooted in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where we create hand-knotted carpets that evolve like living beings. Our process centers around natural, handspun yarns made from recycled and pure silks and wools, and we use rare, natural dyes sourced from plants, spices, and minerals.
We are particularly passionate about reviving forgotten colors, in constant exploration hand in hand with dye masters. Our carpets are made following traditional techniques, preserving the heritage of hand-knotting while exploring contemporary design possibilities. Each piece is a collaboration with skilled craftsmen from Rajasthan and contemporary artists. The magic for us lies in creating a carpet the same way it was done centuries ago, in communion with a new design. That encounter is what moves us.
We are deeply motivated by the materials we work with—understanding how each silk or wool blend responds to different dyes, temperatures, and finishes. The unpredictability of natural fibers is at the heart of our process, making each rug one-of-a-kind, full of character, and never perfectly uniform. This connection to the material allows us to create rugs that we can’t even imagine yet, evolving through constant experimentation.
At Unknown Carpets, we believe a rug is a living element. When placed in a home, it breathes life into the space, like introducing a vibrant presence. This blend of tradition, material mastery, and ongoing exploration drives us every day to delve deeper into the unknown side of carpets.
